There are many online multiplayer video games that come and go, but only a few manage to leave a mark while retaining an active player-base for over a decade. Not only is World of Tanks a game that managed to stand the test of time, it got even better over the years and it kicked off an entire franchise of similar games.

Whether it’s World of Warplanes that you have heard of first or World of Warships – World of Tanks is the game that started it all and it’s still the only game to provide an accurate and addictive experience in the vehicular combat genre. Being successful does not always imply that the game is still as good as it used to be. So, let’s take a look at the game in 2021 and see if it’s still worth everyone’s time.

Best at what it does

World of Tanks is not the only game to feature tank battles, but it’s the only one that doesn’t shy away from making tanks its entire purpose. The game allows tank enthusiasts to enjoy a large roster of normal and premium tanks, and special designs are sometimes released to be played during specific events.

The game designers are aware that they do not need to overcomplicate things in order to please their player base. At the same time, it’s not just a random game where you simply shoot at things with your armored vehicle. It is a proper experience that really does make you feel like you’re inside a tank.

The game might not be for everyone, if only due to the fact that it’s pretty niched. Yet, it is definitely the best at what it does. The game is very accessible thanks to how simple the controls are. But, like any good game, the simplicity can be turned into complexity and depth for those willing to go the extra yard.

Historically Accurate

World of Tanks is not only thematic, it is also historically accurate. Every tank in the game is a flawless representation of real models from the second great War. The level of accuracy with which the different models are crafted is impressive, so much so, they could satisfy even the most hardcore tank nerds.

Whether it’s the interior or the exterior of the tank, their statistics or their different features, or even the way that they shoot and drive – every little detail is designed with precision. And it isn’t done in a pretentious way either, the game does not pretend to be a tank simulator. The details are there for those who appreciate them, while players who just want to blow things up will still have an equal amount of fun.

Intense and strategic

Games are not often strategic and simultaneously intense. Usually, the gameplay is either fast-paced or strategy requires things to be somewhat slow and steady. World of Tanks, on the other hand, can boast to be both at the same time. Players need to find the proper balance between going in for the kill and waiting for the right timing. Going all cannons blazing is sure to get you killed, but you can’t be too careful either, as inactivity might get you shot down by a player who is more willing to take a risk. The intensity and strategy lie in that delicate balance.

World of Tanks is clever and it allows different playstyles to thrive. Some players may prefer heavier tanks and try to go on a quick offensive, while others may favor lighter tanks and try to outmaneuver the enemy. There is not one good way to play the game, everyone should be able to find their own tactics.

There is a great deal of variety to be found on the battlefield as well, as each map comes with its own challenges. There are small maps, large maps, different terrains and designs. The same strategy wouldn’t work on every map, you’ll need to play different tanks or try various tactics based on what’s best suited for the situation.

Like Fine Wine

The visual elements of the game are most certainly not as strong as more recent MMOs in the genre. However, despite being an older game, it’s still pleasant to look at and the graphics do not lower the enjoyment in any way.

The battlefields are designed with care, the tanks are built with great detail, the special effects (such as fire, damage, and weather) all look as good as they should. If World of Tanks had today’s high-end graphics, it’d be a sight to behold. But for what the game is, it’s still not anything to scoff at.

Plus One

Expert players may be able to adopt a lone-wolf approach when playing World of Tanks, but it’s generally wiser to tackle the enemy as a team. It’s quite difficult to take on an entire tank platoon on your own and it’s way too easy to defeat a player trying to do his own thing. If you listen to your team and try to look after your teammates, you will not only have more fun, but you will also have better chances of success.

This is even truer in situations where you need to strategize. You won’t be able to take out enemies who are organized unless you come up with a plan of your own. For example, if the enemy is attempting to hold a stronghold on the map and they had time to fortify their position – sending a few tanks in your team to flank and weaken the enemy’s defenses while the others go in for the kill would greatly increase your odds of winning the day.

The Verdict

A rich multiplayer experience that is sure to satisfy both the tank enthusiasts and the casual players.

World of Tanks is a one-of-a-kind game, and even though there are many clones out there, it remains the one that you should try out first. It’s fun, full of content and it is sure to have you addicted if you are into blowing things.

Pros:

  • Lots of content
  • Rewards teamwork
  • Realistic gameplay and accurate design
  • Visually pleasing despite its age
  • Multiple game modes to try out

Cons:

  • Might feel a bit intimidating to new players
  • Can get repetitive for people who aren’t tank enthusiasts
  • Too grindy for those who want the best in-game items
