Enlisted is a military first-person shooter that’s also a squad-based massively multiplayer online game. From designer Darkflow Software, the game recreates major World War II encounters and transports you to the battlefield where you experience epic-scale infantry warfare. Relive some of the most intense battles of the second great war and play as a military commander trying to lead his squad through chaos, bullets and minefields. Not for the faint of heart, this game will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

LEAD SQUADS OF AI-CONTROLLED SOLDIERS

In Enlisted, you lead squads of AI-controlled soldiers and your goal is to take or defend key control points on the battlefield. You can give orders to either attack or defend a specific position. You can change formation as you advance on the enemy. You can request ammo to resupply your squad or even ask for medical aid to heal those that are wounded. Since you’re the only one calling the shots, you don’t have to worry about any type of miscommunication or having soldiers take off on their own.

There are 12 specialisations available to you to build your squads, ranging from basic troopers to engineers, from radio operators to machine-gunners. You can even pick aircraft pilots or tank crews to join your squads, adding some major firepower to your group. You will need to build up varied squads depending on the current objective, allowing for some deep tactical planning and gameplay. Since combat lets you switch between members of your squad anytime you need to, you will be looking to optimize everyone’s ability as you take on the battlefield.

ONE BULLET TO THE HEAD WILL BE THE END OF YOU

One of the nicest things about Enlisted is that combat is realistically deadly. There’s no HP system on here and one bullet to the head will be the end of you. When you die, you continue to fight as another one of your AI squadmates, making death a significant thing. The more you die, the weaker your squad gets and the more it might become exposed.

This is a very original way to deal with players dying in first-person shooters. In other games (in most cases), a player would either be simply eliminated from the current game or he would respawn at designated locations to keep on fighting. In that sense, Enlisted allows for a better depiction of how tragic warfare is and you might end up wanting to avenge that fallen squadmate of yours (aka yourself).

4 CAMPAIGNS, 2 GAME MODES AND OVER 20 MAPS TO TACKLE

With 4 campaigns, 2 game modes and over 20 maps to tackle, you will have plenty of things to do before you complete a full cycle. And since Enlisted aims at being historically accurate, weapons and equipment will be specific to not only the army you're playing, but also to the theater of war you are fighting in any given match. You will be able to test your squads in the Battle for Moscow, the Invasion of Normandy, the Battle of Tunis and the Battle of Berlin.

As far as game modes go, you can either play in a Domination match or in an Assault. Domination consists of 2 teams battling over neutral control points, where Assault has one team fight as the attacker while the other team tries to defend a succession of key control points. I have a small preference for Assault as it requires you to devise different strategies depending on if you are attacking or defending. In any case, both game modes are great fun.

A PERSISTENT PROGRESSION SYSTEM

In Enlisted, the more you fight, the more experience you earn and the better your squad gets. This persistent progression system is great as it allows you to upgrade your squad’s abilities and weapons, opening the door to many levels of customization. You can increase the size of your squad, allowing you to select more specialists. Soldiers can be upgraded to allow them to carry more gear or new types of weapons. Weapons are not left out of the loop and can also be improved. All in all, I thought this was a great way to bring a deeper layer of strategy and tactics to a game that already had a lot to boast about.

Assemble your squad and have a blast leading them on the battlefield. I, for one, know that I will keep playing this military masterpiece.
